Water resistance comes down to one digit. In an IP rating like IPX7, the second number scores water protection from 0 to 8. IPX4 survives splashes only. IPX7 handles a brief dunk. Splash-proof and waterproof are different promises, so match the number to your real risk.

What an IP rating is

IP stands for Ingress Protection. A rating uses two characters, like IP67 or IPX4. The first number scores protection against solids such as dust, from 0 to 6. The second scores protection against water, from 0 to 8, and now 9. An X means the device was never officially tested for dust. For water, only the second number counts.

The water numbers, decoded

Each water digit maps to a specific test. IPX4 blocks splashing water from any direction, so it handles rain, sweat and shower spray. IPX5 adds resistance to low-pressure jets. IPX6 handles stronger jets. IPX7 makes the big jump: submersion in up to one metre of water for 30 minutes. IPX8 survives deeper or longer submersion, as the maker specifies. An IPX4 device and an IPX7 device are worlds apart. One tolerates a splash. The other takes a dunk.

Splash-proof is not waterproof

This distinction catches people out. A splash-proof device, usually IPX4, handles rain or shower spray fine. Drop it in a sink, pool or bath and it dies. Good makers say so plainly. Take the Luzsco Bluetooth shower speaker as an example. It is happy with bathroom spray. Its maker is clear it must never go underwater, because it is splash-proof, not submersible. Want something you can drop in the pool? You need at least IPX7.

Matching the rating to how you will use it

Think about real risk, not marketing. For sweat during a workout or rain on a walk, IPX4 is plenty. For a speaker or earbuds that might drop in water, look for IPX7. For gear you plan to use underwater, like a swimming tracker, choose IPX8 with a stated depth and time. Do not chase IPX7 when IPX4 covers your use. Never trust IPX4 near open water.

The fine print worth knowing

A few caveats matter. Ratings are tested in fresh, still water. Salt water, chlorinated pool water and high-pressure jets can exceed what the number promises. Salt is corrosive, so rinse a device in fresh water after sea use if the maker allows. Water resistance also fades as seals age and ports wear, so an older device protects less than a new one. Warm water, soap and steam stress seals harder than plain cold water. That is why some makers warn against hot showers even on rated devices. When a maker says do not submerge, believe them.

The bottom line

Read the second digit and you know the limit. 4 means splashes. 7 means a brief dunk. 8 means proper submersion. X just means dust went untested. Splash-proof and waterproof are genuinely different promises. Match the rating to whether your device meets spray or a swim, and respect the maker's limits. Do that, and your gadget lives a long, dry-enough life.
